Used Books Review

Sorry if it seems like i’m posting reviews up everyday but, it gets my blood boiling :3. There’s not alot to do at nights and this is half the reason why I started this blog xD hehe. I read a lot of comics and writing about them here sort of helps me remember them more clearly (Since some say I have a horrible memory). It’s also my way of relaxing, since life has been crazy lately xD. Okay, enough chatter. On with Used Books xD.

About the author

The creator of Used Books goes by the name of Usedbooks on Drunkduck.com (Her real name is Vicki I believe :3). I’ve been reading her comic for about 2 years now, and this was one that I kind of stumbled upon one night. I’ve been glued to it ever since…Literally.

Her comic has been around for a while, and it still remains while others have seized completely. Meaning most of the web comics on Drunk Duck that I used to read when I first joined kinda just…well…died. The creators just vanished from the face of the web, thus, making their comics vanish as well x.x. Very frustrating when that happens and its happenedĀ  A LOT.

About the story

Used Books is a mystery/adventure about a girl named Seiko, and her friends/roomies, Yuki and Kaida. Many years back, Seiko’s mother and father were murdered in cold blood by an unknown intruder in the middle of the night when she was but a little girl. Till this day, the assailant has not been found or identified by the town’s investigators and Seiko, as well as everyone who knew her parents, are clueless as to who would have murdered them in the first place. The murders have remained a cold case since the night they took place.

Regardless of the misfortune that has befallen on Seiko’s past life, she becomes a brave and intelligent woman leading a very normal life. She and her friends run a local bookstore together, where they encounter many interesting, as well as shady customers from time to time. Everyday seems to be an adventure waiting to happen. Before Seiko and the others know it, new mysteries arise and old ones come back to haunt them.

My take

Let me just say this. Used Books never seems to run out of content. It’s really awesome that after all these years, the comic has been able to remain consistant with its main plot :3. I remember when I first joined DD about 3 years ago, I was never able to stick with a single given story. I had a pretty short attention span back then, and I hadn’t yet grasped the concept of writing a full blown graphic novel. Reading through archives like Used Books and many of the other great comics on that site, are what have inspired me to keep going to tell you truth xD.

And from what I can remember, Usedbooks had won an award for most improved comic of the year at the DD awards last year. Vickie’s art has shown much improvement since the night I started reading her comic :3. All of her pages are in color now :D ! That’s an extra step in the art of making graphic novels :3 (That sounds silly the way I worded it, but idk how else to describe it xD. So yes. Usedbooks’ plot is very attention grabbing, the literature is top notch, and the story is multi-scenario, meaning there isn’t a lot of downtime in the story :3.

To wrap things up, Usedbooks is a recommended read for the mystery lover and the adventure seeker. Please check out this comic. Have a good weekend :) .

Hey…I agree. Used Books is one of the most unsung comics on DD. It is also one of the most intelligently written and sweet. Nice review, Peipei

Yes :3. It’s a really good story and like many other good graphic novels out there, it doesn’t get the recognition that it very much deserves.
